Emerald Cedar Creek was a finalist in the 2024 Clayton Utz award. Fine pattern and texture are combined to form an organic surface that represents the beautiful Cedar Creek environment. I use a variety of tools to apply and extract paint from the canvas which results in an intricate etched-like quality. The monchrome palette brings tranquility to the scene while the contrast of lights and darks add interest and drama.

  • KRIS CUSH

Kris' creative exploration revolves around the dynamic landscapes of South-East Queensland and the scenic beauty of her Tasmanian homeland. Her work is an ode to the raw, untamed essence of organic abstraction, capturing the intricate dance between perception and reality within the textured, natural forms and hues found in diverse landscapes.

Working with an intuitive touch, Kris employs both acrylic and oil paints to craft her pieces. Her artistic process involves a meticulous exploration of the fascinating interplay of randomness and illusion that nature so generously offers. This ever-present source of inspiration fuels her creative spirit.

What sets Kris's work apart is her masterful use of exaggerated colours, which serve as the scaffolding for her innovative approach to applying paint. Her technique involves layering, creating a mesmerising interplay between transparency, translucency, and opacity. Each layer builds upon the last, revealing the hidden beauty within the landscapes she interprets.
