JACQUELINE JOOSEN

My inspiration flows from life's milestones, nature and the landscape of human emotion. Living in Far North Queensland, the wet season - altering the landscape through floods, landslides etc. - greatly influences my abstract, intuitive work that explores the complex and often turbulent relationship between this environment and my personal experience within it.

My process is intuitive and exploratory. Each painting begins in a meditative state, which allows me to connect my inner world with the surrounding, ever-changing environment: colours are chosen at random, marks are made with oil sticks, acrylic paint or pencils and handmade collage paper is applied. Layers build up and sanded back to reveal glimpses of what lies beneath.

There is an organic serendipity in my mixed-media approach. I don't choose my subject matter. I just start making marks and see where it leads me. this approach helps me convey the spirit and atmosphere of the place without relying on literal realism or representation. I am more interested in conveying a feeling through an abstract approach.

I paint for my own emotional wellbeing to try and make sense of the world around me, as well hoping to trigger a thought-provoking, peaceful and calm emotional response to my collectors who live with my art. The result is a series of work that feels profoundly personal yet universally resonant, reflecting the uniqueness of my subconscious mind.
